Michael Van Barren Black Male Educator Initiative

The Michael Van Barren Black Male Educator Initiative

The Michael Van Barren Black Male Educator Initiative was established on August 16, 2019, by Dr. Kevin M. Jackson in heartfelt honor of his first Black male teacher and mentor, Mr. Michael Van Barren.

Mr. Barren was more than a teacher — he was a life-shaper.
Serving as Kevin’s music teacher, choir director, Boy Scout Master, and fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Barren played an instrumental role in nurturing Kevin’s talents, instilling discipline, and affirming his identity at a pivotal time in his development. His influence not only shaped Kevin’s character but also directly inspired his decision to pursue a career in education and leadership.

In gratitude for the profound impact Mr. Barren had on his life, Dr. Jackson launched this initiative to uplift, encourage, and support Black male educators across the country.

Each school year, the Michael Van Barren Initiative provides funding for school resources to Black male teachers who are committed to shaping the next generation of leaders — just as Mr. Barren did decades ago.

Our Mission:

  • To honor the legacy of Black male educators who serve as role models, mentors, and changemakers in their communities.
  • To provide tangible support through funding for classroom resources, educational materials, and professional development.
  • To celebrate and amplify the critical work Black male teachers are doing every day to impact students’ lives, especially in underserved communities.

Why It Matters:
Representation matters.
Research shows that having even one Black male teacher can significantly increase the chances of academic success, graduation, and self-confidence for Black students. The presence of Black male educators provides students with not just instruction — but hope, affirmation, and a vision for their future.

Through this initiative, Dr. Jackson seeks to invest in the educators who are standing in the gap, building bridges, and creating pathways of opportunity for generations to come.
