The Michael Van Barren Black Male Educator Initiative was established on August 16, 2019 by Dr. Kevin M. Jackson in honor of his first Black Male teacher; Mr. Michael Barren. Mr. Barren served as Kevin’s music teacher, choir director, boy scout master and 4th grade teacher. He made a powerful impact and played a significant role in his decision to become an educator.

​In honor of Mr. Barren for his impact and mentorship, Dr. Jackson funds school resources for Black Male Teachers around the country each school year.
